The Perioperative Staff Nurse is responsible for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System. The Perioperative Staff Nurse must be a licensed RN with Board certification from a VA-approved certifying body preferred. Duties include but not limited to: The Perioperative Staff Nurse is directly responsible and accountable to the designated Manager or designee The Perioperative Staff Nurse possess knowledge and skills to independently perform duties for all stages of the perioperative process to include preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative duties The Perioperative Staff Nurse possess intraoperative skills; specific to skills and duties as a Circulator and Scrub Nurse; and PACU nurse The Perioperative Staff Nurse possess the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within collaborative and interdisciplinary practice settings. This broad clinical knowledge enables the Perioperative Staff Nurse to effectively direct patient and family care; prepare for surgical cases; guide and support scrub technicians in the patient care process; guide and support students in the training platform to include, but not limited to: scrub technicians, physician assistants, medical students and interns, nurses, residents, and new employees The Perioperative Staff Nurse possess the knowledge and skills to support the Anesthesia staff in the perioperative environment The Perioperative Staff nurse possess the knowledge and skills to respond to urgent and emergency medical and surgical situations The Perioperative Staff Nurse possess the knowledge and skills to independently perform daily and on call duties supporting all surgical subspecialties supported at this facility The Perioperative Staff Nurse possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with internal and external customers, maintain confidentiality of written, electronic, and verbal patient/employee information, work and function within a safe manner including infection control and use of equipment, and assure that patient safety is paramount in all aspects of care Integrate and apply pertinent aspects of the Surgery performance improvement program into their professional practice, utilize nursing research and evidence-based practice; integrate and apply aspects of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations National Patient Safety goals as applicable to the perioperative area of practice The Perioperative Staff Nurse demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to direct care appropriate to the age/population related needs of veteran patients served in perioperative areas. This knowledge includes an understanding of the changes associated with aging and the relevance of this knowledge in developing and implementing a plan of care The Staff Perioperative Staff Nurse must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patient's current health status, which will facilitate in directing the delivery of care appropriate to the age/population specific needs of the adult and older adult patient. They will also demonstrate knowledge of the specific needs of children, as they may be present when care is provided to the adult veteran Perform circulating functions before surgery, including preparing the operating environment, orienting and assessing the patient, and reviewing patient's medical records and surgeon's notes to ensure all pre-requisites and preferences are completed/available Ensues safety checklists and procedures are implemented and documented at all time Perform preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care Participates in order and replenishment of state-of-the art equipment, instrument and supplies used in specialized surgical services Scrub or circulate as assigned Identify, distribute and balance workload and tasks among personnel based on their competency level and experience This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call' basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
