The LPN is expected to comply with all mandated annual review requirements, rotate to clinical areas as assigned and take responsibility for attending in services and continuing education. Duties include but are not limited to: Provides nursing care for and assistance to patients in meeting their personal hygiene needs, such as bathing (shower, bed, tub), oral hygiene, denture care, shaving and grooming, utilizing educational, motivational, and self-care techniques. Provides care to the patient in isolation. Meets the age specific and culturally diverse needs of the patient. Assists patients at snack and meal time, setting up trays and feeding patients as needed, observing for and encouraging appropriate intake, social skills and manners, and administering tube feedings as indicated. Prepares and administers prescribed medications, oxygen and inhalation therapy with emphasis on accuracy and safety. Administers medication according to medical center policies and Nursing policies and procedures. Complies with BCMA (Bar Code Medication Administration) policy and procedure. Assures that patients actually swallow the medication. Receives and validates controlled substances including electronic activation. Verifies blood transfusion with the RN. Obtains blood from the blood bank. Observes for and reports pertinent findings on parenteral fluids. Obtains and assembles equipment for specialized therapies, such as suction, oxygen, isolation. Initiates actions for emergencies such as Medical Emergency, Code Blue, Code Orange and disasters according to hospital plan. Performs such treatments and procedures as irrigating gastric tubes and colostomies, enemas, suctioning, tracheostomy care, sterile dressings and soaks. Applies medical aids, performs catheterizations, including straight, indwelling, suprapubic and external. Performs catheter care. Measures and records vital signs including height and weight, measures intake and output, and disposes of body waste as assigned. Collects and labels specimens (urine, stool, sputum and wound).
