The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) at the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System in Prosthetics Service. The primary purpose as the Health Science Specialist is providing foot care in development of the foot orthotic and footwear treatment plan, analyses for patients with unusual/complex foot conditions and to recognize physical abnormalities, deviations and complicating conditions with potentially life-threatening implications. The Health Science Specialist will serve as the subject matter expert in foot care to develop the foot orthotic and footwear treatment plan. The work includes complex patient analyses for patients with unusual foot conditions, multiple complex foot conditions; assessment of the patient and coordination with physician/requesting provider for the purpose of developing the overall treatment plan with considerable influence in the development of that plan; carrying out the orthotic/foot wear plan, and consideration of new and emerging technologies in designing and fabricating foot devices/foot wear to treat complex foot conditions which include unusual problems, complications and all aspects of prophylactic foot care relative to ulceration treatment and avoidance. The incumbent is expected to recognize physical abnormalities, deviations and complicating conditions with potentially life-threatening implications. The incumbent will use and maintain technical equipment including digital scanner, digital carving mill, vertical jigs, grinders, routers, and vacuum forming equipment. Duties include but not limited to the following: Provide comprehensive assessment of patients with impairment of human movement or musculoskeletal abnormalities for treatment of the foot and ankle function as it relates to therapeutic footwear and orthotics. Uses of technical equipment to obtain scans of body parts and for use in fabrication of prescribed devices. Provides formulation and implementation of a treatment plan based upon comprehensive assessment. Performs diagnostic fitting of prescribed devices, gait training and patient education. Ensures successful pedorthics outcomes, patient health and quality of life. Reassessment of Treatment objectives, modifications as indicated by reassessment, confirmation of patient education and documentation of functional changes. Provides compliance with practice management including participation in planning, workflow, documentation guidelines, limited maintenance of technical equipment, promotion of professional competency and enhancement of pedorthic professional practice. Independently designs custom foot orthotics and uses professional judgement and experience to choose materials for fabrication of foot orthoses and therapeutic footwear.
