The incumbents will be responsible for direct patient care activities under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) for the Minneapolis VA Health Care System Primary Care service line. The Licensed Practical Nurse within this organization is responsible for delivering patient care in a variety of settings by observing and providing care for patients through the implementation of assigned interventions. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Delivers safe, basic physical and emotional care to patients with simple needs while developing technical skills. Assists patients with bathing, oral hygiene, denture care, shaving, grooming and bed making. Positions patients using principles of body mechanics in lifting, alignment, turning, ambulation, transferring and repositioning patients with the use of proper equipment. Assists patients at meal times and feeds patients as needed. Sets up and administers oxygen therapy. Promotes skin healing through the use of a) wound irrigation/packing, b) dressing changes, c) stoma care, d) gastrostomy care, e) application of ostomy appliances, f) application of topical medication, g) routine tracheostomy care, h) routine oral and tracheostomy suctioning. Offers physiological, psychological and spiritual comfort to the dying patient, his/her family and/or significant others. Documents and reports patient responses according to hospital policy. Administers medications in accordance with VAMC Policy and Procedures. Recognizes, reports and assists in emergent and non/emergent situations.
