General Statement of Duties: Performs the pre-analytical technical component or preparatory duties associated with laboratory testing. Performs analytical testing in conjunction with a Medical Technologist Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 lbs. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception. Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases and toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a medical group and laboratory environment. Job Responsibilities: (This list may not contain all the duties assigned and can change) * Perform specimen preparatory procedures. * Operation cytology processing equipment for preparation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens * Maintenance of instrumentation and temperature logs * Specimen accessioning * Data collection for reports and statistical compilation * Checks supply inventory * Actively supports and assists in implementation and monitoring of quality control and quality assurance policies * Attends meeting and participates in professional development activities * Maintains patient confidentiality Knowledge Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, standards and tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and its operation. Ability to monitor Quality Control and to troubleshoot minor problems. Knowledge of pathology laboratory terminology. Knowledge of safety requirements and the ability to recognize hazardous conditions. Ability to recognize and react calmly to emergency situations. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with laboratory staff and medical staff. Qualifications / Education: * AAS Degree in Medical Technology or related science. * One year experience as a laboratory technologist. * As required by governmental agencies. ASCP or NCA preferred. * NYS license required.
